The cervical spine is designed for motion. The structure is similar to lower mammals and is made for ultimate sensory input. The head can move in multiple planes to allow our senses to function, but this motion can lead to problems and thus pain. Pain in the neck can lead to other problems because the neck is controlled by many muscles and these can spasm and thus lead to pain in the neck and other associated areas such as the head. In fact, most headaches will people call migraines are actually what are really called cervicogenic headaches or headaches caused by neck problems. This is unfortunate because headaches from cervical related issues may be correctable but true migraines are usually not and thus require medications to keep them at bay.
